Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house…

Mottled Umber Moth December

… Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

Well actually there was a Mottled Umber Moth! Flying around the house after I accidentally let it in when I opened the front door.

These moths are one of my favourites,  there are plenty of them flying between October and December. They’re attracted to light so you may well see one on your window at night. They come in a variety of shades and colours but they’re common and easy to see in towns and near woodland.

The strangest thing about Mottled Umbers is that only the male (above) has wings. The female (below) is completely flightless and runs up trees to find her mate. Look on tree trunks with a torch after dark and you may well see one.

Merry Christmas btw!
